$599 US Dollars for a Blu-Ray player and an HD DVR is actually a pretty good deal considering Rogers wants $599 Canadian Dollars for their HD DVR.

Timbaland is Saving Popular Music
Jul. 13th, 2007 | 11:03 am
I've gotten into the bad habit lately of letting Much Music play in the background when nothing's on TV and I'm just sitting around typing code. I've noticed that everytime I catch myself bobbing my head and saying to myself "hey, this is pretty hot", and look up from my computer I see THAT guy. Either in the video, or his name in the credits.Having looked up his discography, the artists he's been behind include the late Aaliyah, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtato, Jay-Z. Missy Elliot, Snoop Dog, Beck, Rihanna, etc etc etc
Want to know why that goddamn Umbrella song is so catchy? Blame THAT guy! Catch yourself secretly (or not so secretly) singing Justin Timberlake songs to yourself? Blame THAT guy! Hate yourself for actually liking that Missy Elliot and/or Lil Kim song? Blame THAT guy!
Hmm... saving popular music, or just propagating everything that's wrong with popular music? Well you know what? If I have to choose between another whiny, self-righteous emo band, or a fun, up-beat electronic-infused, hip-hop flavored, sassy pop beat, I'll take the latter.
Well played Timbaland, well played.

Cupertino, Start Your Photocopiers?
Jun. 12th, 2007 | 03:30 pm

Well now, that looks familiar.
At Apple's annual WWDC event, Mr Jobs showed off some of the new goodies in OSX Leopard. The least of which would likely be the new, reflective, 3D dock. The eagle eyes at Maxasia have determined that the new dock bares a striking resemblence to Sun's Project Looking Glass.
Not that I care because I think the new dock looks hot, but I get a kick out of pointing out Apple's hypocrisies

Cooler, More Efficient Computers?
Jun. 6th, 2007 | 03:30 pm
Scientists Convert By-Product Heat Energy Back Into Electricity
This is an intesting article about a technology developed to convert the heat energy produced by computer processors back into electricity which would, in turn, power cooling.
There are many other applications to technology like this if you think about it - nuclear reactors for one. Even coal burning furnases could see tremendous efficiency increases through technology such as this. Or how about improving hybrid car efficiency. The hotter your engine gets, the more charge goes to the battery.
The article also says that this sort of technology could greatly increase the efficiency of solar panels as well.
An promising technology to say the least.

You Never Think It's Going to Happen to You
May. 31st, 2007 | 08:35 pm
Well, my debit card was copied.
I don't know when, I don't know how, but when I got home today I got a cryptic message from the bank asking me to call their "Loss Prevention Centre" immediately. First thing I did was I called the number on the back of my access card to ensure the number I received was indeed a valid TD number. The person at EasyLine was able to confirm the number was valid, I thanked him, hung up and phoned.
I get on the line with a friendly sounding woman who asked me the standard security questions and then said my card had been flagged under suspicion of being copied. She asked if I had tried to make a transaction of $480-some dollars the day before and I said no. She assured me that they had caught it, and prevented the transaction from going through as it was placed in Laval, Quebec.
She told me that my access card was now deactivated and I had to go into a branch to get a new card and create a new PIN. I was also told that it could have been copied 3, 4, or even 6 months ago before they finally attempted to use it. She was sure to mention how much she hated "these people" and how they had "no lives and this is what they do for a living", and so I shouldn't feel terrible about it. She also informed me that if the account had been subjected to fraud, that I would be covered under their fraud protection program.
I'm shocked right now. I always thought I was so good about keeping track of my card. I always kept my eyes on what anyone handling my card was doing, I always tried to shield my PIN entry. My PIN wasn't complex, but it had no meaning and it wasn't obvious.
All I have to say is, wow, I'm so glad I'm a TD customer right now.
EDIT: It looks like
chenry got bit as well. I wonder if this was all from the same scam. If so, the only time I can think of that was sorta suspicious was when we were at Coliseum and using one of those self-serve ticket machines. The machine wouldn't process my card. I tried it a few times, then chenry tried it. Then we moved to another machine and it worked. That's really the only time I can think of where chenry and I both paid debit at the same time.

Google Makes Travel Obselete
May. 31st, 2007 | 11:42 am
Why deal with the cost, noise, traffic and other hassles of travel to visit the legendary Times Square when you can just use Google Maps?
The new steet level view thing is crazy. They drove a truck or something with a 360 degree camera on the roof through the majority of streets in many popular US cities. They have the street level view for San Francisco as well.
You can also pick up and drop the little orange guy anywhere you want to see next without having to type another address.

Introducing Microsoft Surface

Microsoft Surface
( Cut for pictures )
I really love the ideas presented in the videos for bars, restaurants and cafes, and also the retail applications - like product comparisons by just placing the products on the surface. I can't wait for these to start popping up in nice lounges and stuff.
However, I doubt this will catch on for home use. For one, it's far too expensive, and two what point is there in having a coffee table if you can't cover it in controllers, remotes, magazines, cats, etc. I bet before this hits the home space, we'll be seeing it applied in a very different way. Rather than a table, perhaps as an easel or something?

Organize Your Files!
May. 27th, 2007 | 05:08 pm
The Kinkless Desktop 5 part series
I came across this series of articles and screencasts related to organizing your computer's files and keeping a tidy, organized desktop. This series of articles and tips are centered around Apple's OSX operating system, but the majority of principles are easily applicable to any OS.
If you don't feel like all the reading, you can just watch each of the screencasts in order. I've linked them below for your convenience.
Part 1: The "No Mercy" Cleanup
Part 2: Fight Desktop Entropy
Part 3: Aesthetic Computing and Usability
Part 4: Capture and Access Easily
Part 5: Cruelty Can Be Kind
You'd think keeping your files organized is a common sense thing - and it largely is. However, if you're anything like me, your desktop gets cluttered with stuff you downloaded or you're working on that you'll tell yourself you'll eventually get around to putting away or deleting and it just builds up. These tips provide really simply ways to structure your workflow so that files don't get forgotten or build up.
Check it out.
